Chart Arrangement, Layout, and Balancing

In OrgChart Platinum, there are numerous ways to customize the ways in which the information in a chart—specifically, the boxes in the chart—are arranged. Many different “chart arrangement styles” are possible. Using a variety of built-in tools, OrgChart Platinum users can customize the look, feel, and layout of their charts with ease. The following article is a discussion of chart arrangement in OrgChart Platinum.

Chart Arrangement: Selection

To change the arrangement of your chart, follow these instructions:

1. First, select an individual within the chart by left-clicking on their box.

2. Click on Arrange (in the Home tab).

Chart Arrangement: Horizontal stagger

3. Select an arrangement style from the list. For the purposes of this example, we will select Horizontal Stagger.

4. Your changes will be reflected in the chart.

Chart Arrangement: Vertical arrangement

5. Vertical arrangement styles are also available (follow the same steps).

6. It is also possible (via the same menu) to rearrange assistants in a chart.

7. In the example below, we have changed the arrangement of the assistant box from left alignment to right alignment.

Chart Arrangement: Layout

In the course of your org charting, you may sometimes have the need to drastically rearrange the layout of your charts—say, by displaying all of the employees on a single page (creating a “wall chart”), etc. In the following section we will discuss different chart layouts.

To create a “wall chart” with all employees displayed on a single page without any chart breaks, follow these instructions:

1. First, we must group the chart boxes. To group boxes, go to the Grouping tab.

2. In the Grouping tab, we can create or dismiss divisions. Divisions are the “breaks” between subcharts. Removing divisions will put more boxes on a single chart page. Select Dismiss All to remove all divisions in a chart and create a “wall chart.”

3.  You will now see an updated chart without any subchart breaks.

Chart Arrangement: Arrange

4. To give the chart more aesthetic and visual appeal, we can rearrange the boxes. Click on the Home tab again and select the Arrange button.

5. Select various managers and then select a vertical arrangement style. The chart will gradually become more legible.

7. To further increase the chart’s readability, users can also decrease the amount of information shown in chart boxes. Select a box and then select the Properties button in the Home tab.

8. Click the Define Layout tab.

9. Remove the Photo field by clicking the field and dragging it into the list of fields in the panel on the left-hand side of the menu. Now boxes will display only the “Name” and “Title” fields.

10. Click the radio button next to Entire Chart to apply this change to the entire chart.

Chart Arrangement: Compact chart

11. The chart should now become more compact, although you may need to zoom in to see more detail.

12. To further adjust the layout of the page, select the Page Layout tab.

Chart Arrangement: Margin

13. Select Top Margin.

14. Increase the top margin to 100 by clicking the up arrow button. Click OK when finished.

15. The chart’s top margin will increase, simplifying the view.

Chart Arrangement: Fit to page

16. Click the Fit to Page button to fit oversize charts to the page.

17. Use the Size and Position button to manually resize and move the chart. After clicking the Size and Position button, a gray box will appear around the chart, which can then be moved or resized.

Chart Arrangement: Chart balancing

Sometimes users may wish to “clean up” the visual representation of their chart and make it a little more clean and aesthetic. The following section will discuss “chart balancing”—reorganizing the information in a chart so a chart looks more balanced, symmetrical, and presentable overall.

1. If you wish to change the arrangement style of a particular branch of the chart, you can right-click on the manager’s box and select Arrange Subordinates.

2. Select Vertical arrange options.

3. Adjust the Bottom pin shift from the center of the box as shown.

4. The branch will then be moved to the left.

This feature helps to reduce wasted space, tighten up the overall look and feel of the chart, and add balance.

Chart Arrangement: Grouping

5. To group a series of boxes, click and drag to select which boxes you wish to group.

6. Right click on one of the selected boxes and select Vertical Group.

7. Click Create New Group.

8. This will group the boxes together, streamlining the presentation of the chart.

9. We can click and drag the edges of this new combined box to resize it and further condense the chart.

This grouping process can be repeated as many times as necessary to create a cleaner, more balanced chart.
