Concatenate (Join) Two Data Fields

There may be times when you have two fields that you want to put together. A possible example would be separate fields for first name and last name. If you would like them joined to show a single field with both first and last name this can be done using the Concatenate function in the Chart Data Set.

In the three-box chart below first name and last name are in separate fields.  In this exercise we will concatenate or combine these two fields into one.

Concatenate Fields: Define Layout

To concatenate fields the First and Last Name fields, go to the Data tab and select the Chart data set.

Concatenate Fields: Chart data set

Within the chart data set up will select New and type in the name, ”Full Name”

Click on New (1).  A field at the end of the list will appear as Unnamed.  Change this to Full Name (2).  Change the Field Type to Concatenation (3).  In the pop-up dialog make Field 1 FIRST_NAME, and Field 2 LAST_NAME (4).  Press OK.

Concatenate Fields: Add new field

You can now add the new concatenated FULL_NAME field to the chart boxes.  Select one chart box and drag the new FULL_NAME field into the desired position.  Select Entire Chart and press OK.
