Create 9-Box Grids – Employee Performance

A 9-Box graphic is a popular way to illustrate an employee’s performance and potential when doing HR planning meetings.  OrgChart offers a convenient way to create these graphics.

To add 9-box grids into the OrgChart software, you will first need to create your OrgChart from the data source.

NOTE: This data source must have two columns in it: one labeled “Performance” and the other labeled “Potential.”

After you have the OrgChart created, you may then create a rule to display the graphic in the box.

9-Box: Creation

1. To create a rule, go to the Data tab and click on Chart Data Set

2. The Chart Data Set menu will appear. Click New.

3. Name the new field “9-box.” From the drop-down menu under “Type” select “Smart field.”

4. This will automatically bring up the Indicator Options window. Select the Wizard button at the bottom of the window and select the “9Boxes…” option.

9-Box: Parameters

5. Define the following parameters:

6. The Indicator Options menu should look as it does in the image below. Click OK

7. Click OK to update the Chart Data Set.

8. Now that the 9-box grid is available in the Chart Data Set, let’s add it to each chart box.  Select a chart box, right click and select Properties.

9-Box: Layout

9. If not already active select the Define Layout tab and scroll all the way down until you see the data field named “9-box” which you created earlier.

10. Add an extra column to the box by clicking the up arrow on the Columns in box selector.

11. Click and drag the 9-box field from the field list on the left to the upper right box in the preview area.

12. Merge the cells in the right-hand column by clicking on them individually and then selecting the Merge cells button.

13. Select the Entire Chart radio button.

9-Box: Results

14. Click OK. Your changes will be applied to the chart. 9-box grids will now be visible in each box.
